Flood devastation blamed on shrinking forest cover

KARACHI, Aug 13: The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum on Friday observed that floods caused devastation on a massive scale because local feudal lords with the connivance of government officials and legislators of successive ruling parties had cut forests and encroached upon its land for cultivation.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that a deep depression over west central and the adjoining east central Arabian Sea has intensified into a severe tropical cyclone ? ‘Phet’.

At 1430 PST on 2nd June, 2010, it is now centered at 17.5°N - 61°E about 950 Km Southwest of Karachi. The PMD Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre predicts that the system is likely to further intensify into a category 3 cyclone and move towards the coasts of Gujarat and Sindh.

ADB’s Role in Privatization of Essential Services Is Being Protested in Different Asian Cities

Social movements and civil society organizations simultaneously held protest actions in different Asian cities on Tuesday morning as the ADB Annual Governor’s meeting was about to conclude.
The protest actions in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan raised critique and opposition to ADB’s role in the privatization of essential services. All protesters are members of a larger Asian movement called Asia and Pacific Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD).

World River Day observed

HYDERABAD: The World River Day was observed here on Sunday by political leaders, civil society representatives as well as local citizens with a resolve to restore the waters of the Indus River in Sindh.

The leaders of political as well as nationalist parties and civil society representatives criticised the rulers and announced the launch a long-term struggle for the restoration of the Indus River and availability of water in Sindh.

HYDERABAD, March 13: Participants of a long march launched by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum for the rehabilitation of Indus river were given a warm welcome by various nationalist parties and civil society leaders here at Haider Chowk on Saturday.
On their way to the local press club, they staged a sit-in at the chowk.
People showered flower petals on men, women and children participating in the march named as “Sindhu Yatra”. Activists of the Awami Tahreek, STP, SUP and leaders of the civil society also joined the march.
