2009 National Year of Environment

ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: The government on Tuesday announced launching of 2009 as National year of Environment, challenging citizens, businesses and stakeholders to get involved and pledge for a greener future.

“Today Pakistan is confronted with a number of severe environmental problems caused by accelerated rate of economic and demographic changes,” said Minister for Environment, Hameedullah Jan Afridi at a press conference.

Climate change: need stressed to develop early warning system

An early warning system is essential in order to avoid losses to lives and properties, speakers said on Wednesday at a seminar on “Climate change and its impact on the coastal communities.” The event was organised by Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF), and was attended by a large number of fisherfolk from different coastal villages and freshwater bodies as well as experts and representatives of civil society organisations.

Minor quake hits coastal areas of Pakistan

A moderate earthquake of 5.5 magnitude was felt in the coastal areas of Pakistan Friday morning at 2:40 am local time, but no damage of property or life was reported.

According to the Chief Met Officer of Sindh, Raiz, an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck coastal areas of the country, at a depth of 10 kilometres and the epicenter was 305 kilometres west-southwest of Karachi, a private TV channel (ARYoneworld) reported. He also said that at present no warning has been issued as such tremors were not of much concern as long as they remained under 6 magnitude.
