Peasant Rights
Ensuring Justice and Equity for Pakistan’s Agricultural Backbone
Introduction
Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, contributing 70% to the nation’s GDP. Despite their significant contribution, peasants have been marginalized and deprived of their fundamental rights for decades. This systemic oppression, often backed by political influence, has left many peasants without justice or support.
The Struggle for Justice
Peasants in Pakistan face an uphill battle when it comes to securing their rights. The district governments, influenced by powerful feudal lords, often rule in favor of these landlords, leaving peasants without a fair hearing. The local bureaucracy, tasked with addressing peasant issues, often fails to provide justice due to thousands of pending cases in tribunals.
The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) demands the establishment of Peasant Courts, similar to Labor Courts, to ensure that peasants can seek justice without political interference. These courts would be empowered to make impartial decisions, promoting fairness and equity.
Sindh Tenancy Act
The Sindh Tenancy Act, passed in 1950, was designed to protect the rights of peasants and provide essential facilities. However, the Act’s implementation has been largely ineffective due to the stronghold of the feudal-political nexus. For over six decades, peasants have been denied their fundamental rights despite the Act’s existence.
The PFF calls for the effective implementation of the Sindh Tenancy Act to ensure that peasants receive their due rights and can contribute to a prosperous society.
Women in Agriculture
A significant portion of Pakistan’s agricultural workforce comprises women, with 80% of rural women engaged in farming. Despite their vital role, these women often face severe exploitation. The Sindh Tenancy Act grants women the right to hold land in their name, yet cases of female landowners are rare due to the oppressive practices of feudal lords.
The PFF advocates for the protection and upholding of peasant women’s rights, ensuring they receive equal opportunities and recognition for their contributions.
Conclusion
The struggle for peasant rights in Pakistan is a testament to the resilience and determination of the agricultural community. The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum remains committed to advocating for justice, equitable treatment, and the protection of fundamental rights for all peasants, aiming to build a fair and prosperous society.
